4.3l v6 valves

i took apart my 4.3l v6 in a later project truck i plan to build and the valves are sticking into the chamber about 1/16 of a inch as if its not seated is this what im getting right or do the older flat tap style 4.3 v6 have that kind of valves that stick down or is it like every other motor the valves should be smooth with the chamber or even alittle set into the head

By "sticking" down I am presuming you mean the edge of the valve between the face and head is visble above the valve seat and not that there is a gap between the valve face and seat. This is perfectly normal on a production head that has not had a valve job since leaving the factory. In fact on a stock head if they were flush it would "possibly" be an indication of badly worn seats and/or valves. Not necessarily, but it would make me take a look. If they were heads I knew to have had a valve job or 2 I wouldn't be surprised. I'd still want to have them checked though. On a set of performance heads or stockers with a fresh performance valve job I would expect the head of the valve to be flush with the combustion chamber or very close to it.

Note, others may disagree with my thinking on this and they may very well be right. As I get older a lot of the automotive "sacred cows" I grew up with are finding there way to the Alpo factory. That's another post all in itself.....

Plenty of SBC valves stick out too. One way to check to see of they are seated off the engine is to pour a little rubbing alcohol down the ports with the head sitting flat. There shouldn't be any seepage into the chamber.
