4 door

OK guys & gals, I've got a question that may get a lot of responses. Why does there seem to be a stigma with 4-door vehicles? What is there about 4 door cars that seems to be a turn-off? I must admit, most of the vehicles I've ever owned have been 4 doors, mainly for reasons of practicality. But I find a 4 door sedan to be just as nice a car as a 2 door coupe. And what's wrong with a 4 door hot rod? Go ahead...blast me for even asking...I'm a big boy...I can handle it. Bring it on, let's hear your opinions!
P.S. I've got a 1948 Plymouth 4 door street rod, and I love it, so I may be a little bit opinionated!!

I have been a motorhead for over 50 years... following most parts of the rod, custom, and racing facets that the hobby is made up of. I think I can sum it up for you....... Two doors are generally "Better looking."

Two doors tend to have less posts, windows, seams, handles, etc. On early bodies, they also tend to look more "sleek".

The social aspects of a four door also come into play. Taxis and police cars are four doors. The cars that are bought to impress are more often two doors. The car that a guy would buy after marriage and a new family was more often a four door, since "looking good", now was overruled by being "functional".

Of course you are in America... so you can have an opinion (for now)... but I think you will find that prices will tell the real story.

Compare the market value of a '57 Bel Air hardtop... and a '57 four door sedan... and you will find the when the majority of people choose... they are willing to pay much more for the 2-doors. That would indicate a majority preference for them.

One last point... The classic show cars, drag cars, and movie cars have been overwhelmingly two doors. That influences a buyer's to desire even more.

As a result....

The good part about four doors is that there are more unbuilt... unrestored... and affordable cars available. The reason is obviously that they were not grabbed up for a hot rod or custom project in the last 50-100 years. Now the supply is limited, so the popularity is rising some. I have also noticed that for younger enthusiasts, they are becoming more acceptable. Most Boomers might not embrace that concept. :-)

I would ask this... "If you could have whatever you wanted... and price wasn't an issue... which would you choose for yourself???

I would grab a two door! :-) Feel free to disagree.

I hotrodded a 1931 Chevy Sedan, 350 with a tri-power, it turned out to be a neat car and a great driver. I even did a wedding for a friend and his bride.!! I ve got pictures somewhere, I ll have to dig them out.
