Post 4-lug axles to 5-lug in Ford 8.8 ??

I have an 8.8 rearend out of a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe going into the hot rod. It currently has 4-lug axles and disc brakes. Can I swap 5-lug axles from a Ranger or Mustang into that rear and will they work with the backing plates/disc brakes?

Thanks for your help

Not sure about the other 8.8's but the rangers use different size axles from side to side. In other words one side is longer than the other. I believe mustangs use axles of the same size.

you can have the flanges redrilled for 5 lugs and press the studs in the new holes and Ta-daa!! 5 lug axles!

[quote]AXLE SHAFT WIDTHS

If you are interested in swapping axle shafts between rear ends, it is possible to obtain the axle shaft width information from any Ford garage. Most of the time, people are interested in exchanging 4-lug shafts for 5-lug units using stock Ford components. Be aware that axle shaft interchangability is not always possible and may require custom-made shafts to fit your application.

Here is some axle shaft interchange information:

7.5" / 8.8" Cougar/T-Bird (4-lug) interchanges with 7.5" Mustang (4- or 5-lug)

8.8" Turbo Coupe (4-lug) interchanges with 1994-98 Mustang V8 w/ABS (5-lug)

8.8" Mustang (4-lug) interchanges with Ford Ranger (5-lug) - 2 passenger side shafts only

Can it be that 49 T&C means hwat I think? You have a 49 Chrysler Town & Country convertible!!
This would make a fantastic hotrod or custom car...
The CCCA mad ethe "nothing" Crown Imperials from 46-48 full classics, but the fantastic Town & Country---nothing.
Go figure!

Yep,

It began as a New Yorker convert. Nice straight rust free body. Someone subframed it before I got it. I used to do some cabinet wrk so steambending the Ash is no biggie. '49 is the first year for DYNOC Mahogany siding (like Caravans/Jeep Cherokees) Hence the T&C vert. It's going to be a cruiser, not a racecar. It's got a 360 mope heart /RV cam/727/PS/disc brakes all around intermittent wipers from a Ranger(needed in FL).

The rearend in question is a 3.55 posi. So it ought' scoot when I need to and ride pretty well.

TIP - rear from a 5-spd turbo coupe are 3.55 posi's, from an auto turbo coupe are 3.90 posi. I've seen them for $100 - $150 all over the U. S.
