4 speed Muncie Help ??
I'm in the middle of swapping my 67 camaro from an automatic to 4 speed. Everything is pretty much complete at this point but for some reason the tranny won't go into neutral, It was just completely rebuilt and I installed a hurst competition plus shifter on it, setup all the linkage,...it seemed to be shifting properly through all the gears, then when we put it in the car it wouldn't go into neutral.......the shifter goes into the neutral position but the tranny is still in gear ! The tranny is an M20 wide ratio.

Try unhooking the shifter rods from the levers on the transmission case and then see if you can put it into neutral that way. If not, the problem's internal. Hopefully you just haven't got the linkage adjusted properly yet.

I've got the linkage unhooked and tried moving the lever's into neutral but still won't work.
|
If it shifted fine on the gronund before you put it in, and now it doesn't come out of gear into neutral with the linkage off....then the problem is either in the side plate or the synchro drums.

It shifted fine out of the car but I never checked if it was actually in neutral.
I went over the installation chart again and realized that I had the reverse lever on upside down. The reverse was suppose to be disengaged (towards the front of the car)when setting up the linkage but the way I had it installed it was engaged (because it was upside down) could this have caused damage inside the tranny ?? |

Thanks for the info Vince, the car is still sitting on stands and hasn't been driven.
I'm tempted to pull the side cover off but I wouldn't know what to look for and I don't want the guy who rebuilt it to blame me if the problem isin't something I caused. |
I just spoke to a friend who suggested I may have the wrong clutch & pressure plate, when I step on the clutch the wheels or drive shaft won't turn. The clutch kit I used is a Luk, part # 04-021 10 & 1/2"

Your right Vince, the transmission was locked up. I used a big screw driver
between the yolk & driveshaft after removing the shifter linkage and it finally went into neutral. Thanks again |
4 speed muncie help?
Trouble is, if there is a problem with the side cover, it will lock this trans into two gears again.
|
I think I caused the problem by putting the reverse lever on upside down and having reverse engaged rather than having it in neutral. sofar it's shifting fine but I haven't driven the car yet.

Years ago, I had an M-20 with a Spark-O-Matic 3-speed shifter controlling the forward gears, and a separate lever for reverse. Engaging reverse while still in a forward gear made a simple but effective parking brake. I never had any problem with that setup, and it shifted great.

Spak-O-Matic, man does that bring back memories. How many times did I have to pull over to the side of the road and crawl under my 56 to unstick that shifter? Thought I had died and gone to heaven when I finally got a Muncie 4 speed and Hurst Competition Plus shifter. Vince |
