4 speed VS. 5 speed trans

this is gonna sound stupid and a novice question but is there any difference between a 4 speed manual trans and a 5 speed manual other than the extra gear like different gear ratios in lower gears or is 5th just a highway gear? torque difference in lower gears? added or lost horses/torque?

the gear ratios in the trans can vary depending which vehicle they are used in. for example the old borg warner t 10 4 speeds of the 60's were used by gm ford and amc and there were different ratios between the corvette close ratio 220 box.and the full size chevies. ford used different ratio's// the t 5 5 speeds used by ford gmc and foreign makes have different gear ratios and the world class t 5's are stronger. there are a few places on line that give a lot of details

There are very big differences in all types of transmissions. There are differences in five speed transmissions from one company to an other. Even the same model transmission can sometimes have different gear ratios (example: the NV4500)

What are you looking to do? What do you have now and where do you want to go with it?

If you are looking at cars and trucks over the years, I have some examples.

Ford 4 speeds of late 60's, early 70's had two versions (used in Mustangs and Fairlanes). One had a 2.78 low gear (for small block engines with less low end torque) and the other had a 2.32 low gear (usually for higher torque engines).

Ford made a four speed overdrive for trucks, starting in about 1978. It was a 3 speed with an added overdrive 4th for fuel economy. It was completely different than the older truck transmissions, which were 3 speed with a "granny" low gear (lower than 1st).

Most current five speeds are a four speed with an overdrive 5th; however, the overdrive ratios can be different. Most are about .75 in high, but some go as high as .62 overdrive.
