4 speed vs. th400 big block rear gears

I'm very happy with my set of 3.73s running behind my 4 speed small block (approx 300hp) in a 69 Camaro. I tach about 3,000 at 60mph on the highway, and it gets out of the hole very nicely too.

My Chevelle will have a 450hp big block 454 with a TH400 trans behind it. I have 3.36s for it.
I'm thinking the car will have plenty of launch just from the motor and trans alone, and I might be okay with these gears.
I don't have any experience with an automatic with that much torque so any opionions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

the 400 is a strong trans, however, the weak link in these tranny`s is the sprag. as long as you don`t plan on hard launches with high stall or abuse the tranny, it should survive okay. the gear you have isn`t that bad, but it would likely benefit from 3.73`s when you consider the weight of the chevelle, but in most cases, high torque engines like the big block are okay with higher gears, as long as they aren`t too high.

what is a sprag.?

I guess the fact that its automatic or stick doesn't matter. Highway gear will still be 1:1 and 1st is about 2.48:1 on the TH400. I'm not sure what 1st is on the muncie M20.

ddoublevision, i know you are a racer and pretty smart, so i am wondering why you are saying the th400 has a weak sprag when most of the replies on this and other sites say that is the weak link of the th350 and that if it is replaced with a stronger one it is as strong as a th400, and the th400 is pretty much regarded as bullet proof, since it came with all the big blocks.
