40 Ford Coupe door adjustments

At this time, both doors have very little gap at the top rear edge. The hinges are welded to the doors, but bolted to the cowl. What is the best way to adjust the doors so the gap is the same all the way around the door?

If the gap on the sides of the door front and back are good, shim the body mounts that are closest in line with the rear door jambs up. If the gap on the doors looks like the door needs to be rotated in the jamb, you can bend the hinge, in your case towards the front of the car, or the top hinge back, depending where the gap needs to move. If you bend the hinge, make sure the bend is parallel with the line of the hinge pin. Just working on the same thing on a chopped 41 ford pickup, I have had to build up the door edge slightly with weld in some places, you may have to remove some, but don't be too quick with this as if it hasn't been chopped you should be able to get it to fit with shimming body mounts and working with the hinges.

40 Ford Cpe Door Adjustments

If the upper part of the door is tight to the roof , either shim the body bolts along the door striker side, there should be two points , one at the door edge and the other in front of the wheel well or, the upper hinge can be loosened and washers inserted between the hinge and the body, this in effect tilts the door down at the top. The proper way to determine which way to shim, is to look at the gap along the door edge when the door is closed. If the gap is the same top to bottom, shim under the body to frame, if the gap is wider at the top shim at the hinge.
