400 block with 327 crank

i know theres lots of other threads about it and the old magazine article, but i have some other questions that i couldnt find in the other threads.

if i used some afr 180cc heads, edelbrock performer rpm intake manifold, and some shorter rods than what they used (no ford rods) probably 6.125 eagle H beam, and some type of piston (do i need them custom made?). and a pretty stock 350 cam. maybe a .470 lift at the 215* duration the article said.

does anyone have any experience on building this engine?

thanks for any help that may come my way

It's a total waste of time to build this short stroke engine unless you are going to rev it to 8800-9000 rpm(with heads to match $$$$) ALL the time, and that small of a cam is only going to get you just past half way there . At the rpm levels that match your cam choice, it won;t make any more power than a similarly built "normal" 350 . It will however, cost you twice as much!

def. not worth it. those articles sound real sexy but like ericnova said theres no use...it would be easier to start out with a 4 bolt 350 and beef the hell out of it, get it well balanced and go from there if you really need to be in the super high rpm range...

We built several 400s with 327 crank for dirt track racing and it's the winning combonation for slick track condition.

You could get real close to those numbers with a 350. You build a 350 and a 377 the same way and the 377 will have more power in every way every time.

I always thought it would be fun to build a 400 with a 302(or 283 and weld the journals up) crank, add a solid roller cam, tunnel ram, some nascar heads, and 4.56-5.13 gears in a little T-bucket or something. Then gas went up
I'm planning on a vortec 350 possibly eaton m90 supercharged for the little rpu I'm building.

I'm doing something very similar for a buddy. It has a dart block, and will be an all forged lower end, and parts alone will cost that much. They are great motors, and have their place, but they aren't cheap. This one will be a $10,000+ turbo beast. $1500 dart block, $3000 in a solid lower end, plus cam, lifters, oil pan etc., and you can't do it for your price, unless you want to use stock stuff.

Some years ago this was a popular way to build a NASCAR engine in the 355 CID limited classes. They used an aftermarket or Bowtie block, not a 400 since they won't do in these highly stressed classes. The only reason to build like this is to reduce piston speed in a high RPM engine. Some people contend that moving the stroke around also moves the RPMs where the torque and power peaks occur. While this is true, the effect is quite minor. It's unlikely, except on a dynamometer, that you'd feel much difference between a 4 inch bore X 3.48 inch stroke 350 compared to a 4.125 inch bore X 3.25 inch stroke 347.

Bogie
