400 bored .030

Ok, I've got a 400 sbc bored 0.30 over. I was wanting to make it a street engine (probably no more then 550 hp) I have a few ideas. I was thinking about stroking it and putting either vortec heads or the Edelbrock E-Tec 200. I was also thinking about doing the exact oppisite and putting a 350 crank to make it a 383 and have the revs. It is only going to be a weekend car of course. Which combo would be better? And how much power could I end up with?

why must you mention "heads" gees man didn't you learn anything from that last "head" post

I thaught if you put a 350 crank in a 400 block it became a 377
but as for the rest you already said it if you stroke it = more HP, but if you go the other way it's all torque
so it's mainly up to you the Q is which do you want????????

oh de-stroking it if you decide to use the 350 crank in the 400 block you might have to use "spacer bearings" since the 400 is made w/a large 2.65 main journals as for the 350 crank it was made for a 2.45 med. journal
or you could get a custom ground crank$$$$$$$

If it was me I'd go the other way towards stroking it, but it's not

J

Ok well I guess it is a 377. I still need to work on my auto math . So your saying, if I go with a 350 crank i'll get more torque?

You will have less torque and less power initially with the destroked engine.

You won't get 550 hp with the E-Tec heads. For those numbers you will need the Victor heads. AFRs will do it too. So will the Motown lites.

Then what would the E-Tecs be good for?

Yes. You can get better rod ratios that way. There was a build in Hot Rod magazine called "The 350 Chevy Should Have Built". You can do a search and find it. It uses a 400 block with a 350 crank. It still won't make more power or torque than the 400, but it is way more efficient than a standard 350.

Recycling.

They are okay heads, but for the same money you can get heads that flow a lot better.
