There's a lot of time and talent involved in doing that, but those are the ones that turn my head. Anyone with a mastercard can throw together a big inch maxed out LS series engine and make 700 hp- that's all because of the amazing technology available off the shelf. But the people that can run 11's on stock 305 castings- well that's something to take notice off. Atleast in my book. Register now (free) or login to remove ads |

400 horsepower
I can remember back along time ago when every engine around had 400 horsepower, supposedly. As I've aged and discovered dyno's and dollars I now know that most are lucky to have 350 let alone 400. horsepower aint cheap. Gotta spend some money. We had a stroked buick that made 550 on a dyno. I had never had one like this before. My buddy said "mine makes the same" I had rode in his quite often so I figured no problem. We installed my engine went out here on street tires with a possy and no POWERSTEERING!!! couldnt find a gs pump yet. My girlfriend was 6 months pregnant with my new born son and at about 20 miles an hour with the auto and 3000 stall and dropped low gear and opened the 1000 cfm barry grant carb all the way and look out. off both sides of the road, girlfriend sick in the car couldnt steer it quick enough no powersteering, down in the ditch. My friends car, not even close in horsepower. Si do your homework dont be a "Yeah my car is 400 horse, dyno and show the slips, read and weep!!!

Theres an article on the webb (Chevy performance sight or ??) about taking a stock 400 and puting on a set of Vortec heads and a 4 bbl and badaboom, 400+Hp!
If its that easy with a 400 then Vortecs would be a good place to start with a 350. I woulld think that those heads with a well selected cam, intake and carb that a 350 could get real close. |

Chevy High Performance several years ago took a Good Wrench 350 thru a series of step by step changes from the 230 hp it developed off the crate to well over 400 in modified form. To hit 390 something they used Vortec heads, a Performer 2 plane intake with a 750 Holley, a Comp 268 cam, and 36 inch 1-3/4 inch headers. Porting the Vortecs took it to somewhere close 410. All this with the original bottom end which included these really crummy dished pistons with 4 valve reliefs. So assuming their numbers are honest, it doesn't appear that getting 400 horses from a 350 or a 400 is all that hard to achieve. Bogie |

I always go to gm performance parts and look at there crate motor techs and try to get parts as close to theres as possible. I have a 96 350sbc that I am building to match the zz4350 specs. The only thing its not going to have are aluminum heads but everything else pretty close. Theres even chepaer ways of getting 400hp without using nos. Just do a little research.
