Post 400 SB help

I just purchased a Camaro with a sb 400 in it. Supposed to be a fairly new overhaul, but blows a lot of blue smoke when started and also blows some oil from the tailpipes when cold. Compression checked out fine. Has a bit of a cam,(not sure what). Any ideas on timing as well.

Sounds like it could be valve guide wear that wasn't dealt with or poor seals, either one would cause similar symptoms especially with a little extra camming.

Another thing I should have mentioned is it has a high output oil pump (65lbs) and a deeper oil pan. It has a chrome dipstick, but with the deeper pan does it need a different dipstick? Could I be overfilling it and causing the problem?

The stock dipstick should be o.k. for level, it will still set at the same level below the crank ( the important part when talking oiling problems),if the higher pressure pump was creating the problem I think it would constant instead at the periods you mentioned. It could also be rings not fully seated if the rebuild was a re-ring (with no bore job)and is still fresh.
