On the stamping pad in back of the altenator there is usually a 3 letter code like TMC or CMJ or something.You can look that up in an old chiltons and it will tell you what model and year cars had that code.
But more importantly there is a way to tell(not sure on 400)the nickel content of the block.On a 350 there will be an 010 or 020 under the timing cover.On a 400 I think its the last three digits of the block #(in your case 817)but I'm not positive. |

Can you describe the engine? Is it stock? Are you going to leave it stock? What kind of carb does it have? Mid-70's SBC 400's aren't rated for a lot of horsepower, maybe from about 165 to 240 depending on the configuration, but they are long on torque.

hi
i bought it from a guy who bought it from gm it was acreat motor and it was in a van with a th400 trans also so they only thing i have found out for sure is that it is a 1976 but as far as what is in side i have no idea not being a motor head i thought that all the motor codes on the block would tell but i cant find them.
