hello i bought a 400 sbc the code on the back is 330817 this just tells me that yes it is a 400 but from 1973-1980 i would like to know more it also have a number on the front of to13LS i cant seem to find this any on he back of the motor their is a T5 and A6/76 and also a conv1 and in the flywheel area is a Lh1 any help in the matter would bet great thanks.

On the stamping pad in back of the altenator there is usually a 3 letter code like TMC or CMJ or something.You can look that up in an old chiltons and it will tell you what model and year cars had that code.
But more importantly there is a way to tell(not sure on 400)the nickel content of the block.On a 350 there will be an 010 or 020 under the timing cover.On a 400 I think its the last three digits of the block #(in your case 817)but I'm not positive.

Your date code represents A= January 6 -6th -76- 1976

is their any way to find out the horse power buy these numbers

Can you describe the engine? Is it stock? Are you going to leave it stock? What kind of carb does it have? Mid-70's SBC 400's aren't rated for a lot of horsepower, maybe from about 165 to 240 depending on the configuration, but they are long on torque.

i bought it from a guy who bought it from gm it was acreat motor and it was in a van with a th400 trans also so they only thing i have found out for sure is that it is a 1976 but as far as what is in side i have no idea not being a motor head i thought that all the motor codes on the block would tell but i cant find them.
