Okay thanks very much guys
Having never actually seen a helicoil before, I "assumed" that's what it was. You have also picked up on why i am hesitant to muck with it. I know it's not a metric thread now as it takes a waterpump bolt and I'm sure it's the next size down from the headbolt and unc. I'll find the strongest bolt I can and use that and see how it goes. What's stronger though, a grade 8 bolt or a stainless bolt? Or is there some other bolt I should look for and does the landing near the head of the headbolt matter as I'm sure I won't find another bolt with the same type of landing. Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about?

Use a head stud. Don't forget to put sealer on the head stud threads.
