400 sbc builds.
 
I got my 400 the other day. Trying to get a idea on what parts to use. What kind of builds do you use with your 400?

Looking to get around 350-400 hp/tq at least. My budget is about 3 thousand maybe more.

what do you want to do with it? what vehicle, gears tranny? octane?

With a stocker type 400 you could run a dish (or flat top) hyper and about 218-228 dur and 450-480 lift on a 112 -114 and make tha powert with just about any old heads. Your desired goal for TQ is easily attainable. Are you buying a complete rotating assy? I don't assume you'll be racing this motor, just want something with big grunt. A set of cylinder heads with about 180-200cc runner would serve you well - even set of Summit ZZ5 VORTEC heads on a mild 400 ought to save you a few bucks and run like a raped ape. What type head are you planning to use? How about intake/carb? Will you be using a flat tappet cam?

I want it to be a street motor to see the odd strip pass. Its going in a 1978 malibu.

you can do quite a bit with $3000. If you have committed to this amount have the block bored, line honed and decked.
Get a nice internal balance crank and dish top pistons. Decent aluminum heads can be found on ebay for $800 or less, a 185-200 cc runner will be ideal, I'd like the 200cc's personally. Air gap intake and a cam with around 235-240* @ 050 and as close to 500" lift as you can get with that duration. 2500 stall and it will make serious power. Basically what Stroke said :)

I agree but I would go for flat top pistons instead of dished. No need to give away compression. Pump gas will work close to/up to 11:1 cr. Especially if you go with aluminium heads.
A solid short block is always a good idea, but if your crank, flywheel, rods, etc etc are in good condition I wouldn´t bother converting to internal balance. Not for 350hp anyway.

I just finished a 406 build and to be honest i got the whole motor for 500 bucks last summer and it had all sorts of goodies in it.

Cola forged crank
titanium 5.7 rods
wisco forged pistons
Brodix SPEC heads
2.06 intake 1.60 valves (titanium)

crane rev kit
1:5 ratio roller rockers on exhaust
1:6 ratio rollers on intake
super victor intake
AED 850 DP carb
(only thing I changed was the cam and rockers)
the motor was a backup IMOD motor.
