400 SBC Casting Numbers

Guys I have what I think is a mystery, I have a SBC 406 and I checked the casting number and it is 395509 there is also a 509 on one of the side of the block. I have looked everywhere on the internet and I can find 3951509 or 3951511 but not a 395509. I have crawled into the engine compartment and have absolutely confirmed the number. What if anything does this mean I know for sure it is a 400 bored 30 thousands out to be a 406 but no where on the internet in any list is this number. Does anyone know ?????????

Mark thanks for the reply, I know you don't know me and wonder if I have a screw loose, this is why I am posting this not that it matters but it drives me crazy. I have that part of the block so clean you could perform surgery on it and have literally crawled into the crazy thing head first with lights that would give you a sunburn and saw it with my own eys perfectly the 1 is missing. It is 395509 no doubt. I also saw a post on this board of another guy wondering if he had a 400 and reported the same number. That is when I put the mirror down and crawled into the damn thing myself to confirm what I already suspected. I also could not find 395509 anywhere on Mortec or a half dozen other places. Is this just a mistake by GM on a particular casting run or does it mean something. Again it doesn't matter other than it is a mystery and it is driving me crazy.

I think its safe to say you can rest at ease. Its pretty much just a casting goof done at the factory. I've seen other small blocks have this same issue where a number was missing or was cast so faintly it was hard to tell if it was ever there. In other cases I've seen casting numbers so screwed up with casting flash and left over sand from the casting process you couldnt even make the numbers out. Look on the passenger side deck, right behind where the alternator sits and get the suffix code, with it we can find out what your 400 came in from the factory.

If would not surprise me that one number is missing!

I have an '89 Coleman tent trailer. When ordering parts, I have to give the VIN so I get the right stuff. EVERY time, i'm told the VIN is no good! Not even close. So I take the VIN number to the MVD and they tell me it's no good, no such number, no such zone, to coin an old Elvis song! BUT, I finally found my original title and guess what, same number is on the tag that is on the title. I"m just hoping to sell it before I have to go fight MVD on the thing!

Mark

Thank you guys for the great welcome to a newbe and talking to me over such a trival thing I was worried about bringing this to the board but you made me feel welcomed. I haven't seen half as many blocks as you guys and didn't realize there are so many screw ups all over the place and a VIN number WOW I thought that was sacred. I hope I can add to someones discussion as you guys did for me, most of you guys are way over my head but I'll try when I can. I didn't even mention how much I love this engine it has been great and is just really strong and truly a Mighty Mouse motor. I have it in a 1970 Z28 and it's putting out just over 475 horses. With the cam and 3 inch Flow Masters when I pull up next to a modern day muscle car and they hear it pinging them off most people won't even make eye contact with me, it's really funny. This is my first encounter with a sbc 400 and I can't say enough, it's the best. Thank you again Mark I looked at your pictures, how is your sons 400 running it looked great.

It's running fine so far. 2 years and no leaks or problems, well, atleast after dumping the Pro Topline heads in favor of the World TorquerII's. Only problem is it's in a heavy truck with the wrong converter stall speed. But he's happy overall.
