400 sbc combo advice

I purchased a long block from a friend, a .04 over 400 sbc with pocket ported 200cc sportsman 2 heads, with hydraulic flat tappet cam that is 244/250 at .05 and .540 lift, 106 lca, 5.7 rods and hyperutectic flat top pistons. This motor is going in my 2400lb 32 ford strip/street car. I need a converter recommendation (Turbo 400 with 4.56 gears/30 in dia. slicks). I am considering changing the hydraulic cam for a solid. (I am concerned about the hydraulic cams 106 lca being to tight for street use?) Would I pick up much power going to a mech. cam? What would be a good choice for intake and carb.

I would leave that cam in there. That is a healthy cam. A 106 will make it very choppy at idle, and not a lot of vacuum for brakes (if you have power brakes), but it will scream on the top end. I'd suggest a minimum stall of 4000rpm. With such a light car that you have it will still drive fine. The converter won't flash much when you are just cruising. You'd only pick up power with a solid if you go north of 250 degrees, and you might run into clearance issues.

For an intake I would run a good single plane such as an Edelbrock Victor jr, or a competing brand. For a carb i'd run something like a QFT 850 right here:


I had the opportunity last week to tune a QFT carb, and I am very impressed by the adjustability and the quality of the carb.
