400 sbc head

I'm building a 400 sbc for the street. When I purchased the block my intentions were to build a racing engine, now just a street engine. I bought a set of Brodix track 1 heads from a guy, these heads have huge valves and ports and I really don't want to use them on the street.

My question is how do you determine the best head for your application? Is there a stock head that is better than others? Is there a stock head with a little work could be a good head?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I would rethink this, I have a 406 sbc with these heads, the response is unbelievable, this thing pulls like a big block, makes 420 dyno hp, gets 20 mpg in my 84 vette with modified twin tbi.

What intake did you use? I have a matching very high rise, I thought with the large ports and valves I would get less torque....

That head is just fine for a 400.

I know someone running the Track 1s fully ported in a 406 on the street and hes putting down like 500 hp and runs in the 11s. He gets real good gas mileage because its fuel injected and runs smooth with a street intake and mild cam. He wants to run single plane and a more aggressive cam to see what the heads really can do.

400 sbc

Thank you for your help! I think I will go ahead and run these heads. Got any suggestions on cams for this engine? I guess I will run the hi - rise intake that is matched to the heads as well.

I'm using the stock looking twin throttle body intake, to use on track 1s you need to do a lot of port work, but it was worth it, the cam is an edelbrock performer RPM item, [1500-6500 rpm] hyd.very mild idle, you mite look into this. works great with power brakes. hope this helps have fun.
