400 small block heads and bore condition
Are factory 400 small block heads worth rebuilding (if not cracked)? I just got a 400 (long block) and I am trying to figure out if the factory heads (I didn't look at the casting number) are worth messing with. The block has the three freeze plugs on each side. What does anyone think?
What are the specs on the cylinder bore being egg shaped. What is too much eggness? |

All of the stock 400 heads I've seen have been 76cc. There's a lot of 882s, but there are some heavy-casting 997s and 493s. Nothing wrong with them and they might come in handy, unless you go to a dished piston, to keep the compression in the pump gas arena.

No more than .003 outa round for best wear and ring seating. You can get away with more though. It's just not ideal.
