I have BOP 400th with a B&M shift kit and a 2800 stall. My problem is the tranny does not shift hard like it should. It shifts perfectly like a good stock 400 though. So if it were the vacuum mod, wouldn't it not shift until higher RPM and then shift hard? Could it be the torque converter? I don't think the torque converter has anything to do with shifting but i thought i would just ask. I also have rechecked the check ball placement and they are fine.

You know what... I ran into a guy that had nicely built motors in old school cars- he saw my 1980 Malibu and approached me about what's under the hood and I told him a healthy-cammed sbc350 with headers, blah blah, and a th400 tranny with a B&M shift improver kit. He began to tell me about how I won't ever get the pull and chirp of tires through second gear like I wanted- or better yet like I would if I had a th350. And it seems kinda right, considering the gear ratios of the two transmissions. My th400, when I mash the pedal, will stab out in first, but it all sounds the same, througout 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. I can BARELY hear the difference in the gears. I have a roughly 3000 RPM stall T.C. on the trans, and it sounds as if I'm running one gear thoughout the gear changes. Wild, huh? Even when accelerating slowly, I don't feel a strong kick when going into second...

Weird! Me and my Dad have the exact same setup in Chevy trucks running BB Olds w/ the 400th. His shifts very firm and he doesn't have a stall(but doesn't need one for his application). He has no problem smokin em through the gears, but i can't even get second gear chirp. It seems like the more gas the less firmness there is to the shift. Which makes me think vacuum, but....?
