400ci build. Have a few questions.

Ok. For beginners I bought an 87 firebird drag car rolling body. Has roll cage, 410 Richmond gears, exc, exc. I have a moderately built th350 trans awaiting a motor. I found a good deal on craigslist. What I bought was a std 400 block. It came with a new 488/488 comp cam, Keith Black KB125 pistons, comp cams 7372 push rods, unknown name roller tip rockers, eagle rods(so I was told, they look stock to me and only numbers I can find don't bring anything up on google), Vector JR intake. The heads are cast iron with casting number 3988336. I googled it and got back many valve sizes. Anywhere from 1.74 to 2.02(I'll try to find out tomorrow with a micrometer). He said the heads where rebuilt, but they look like someone droped the valves and just cleaned them up. (Incase anyone was wondering, I payed 600 for everything.

Now for my question. I am looking to upgrade heads, and many people say go with vortecs, but they will need to be machined. I am not looking to spend 800 on a set of heads for my first drag car. I know horses cost money, just looking to make the most bang for my buck. If you recommend vortecs, what exactly will I need to do to them, whats castings should I stay away from if any, and how much am I looking at spending. Bottom end seems solid, and I want to keep the motor streetable in case I decide to put the motor and tranny in another body to make a strip/street machine, so will need it to be able to run on pump gas.

I know the subject "Double hump VS. vortecs" have been beat to death, but looking to find out what bests matches my setup.

Thanks in advance! Tim

Just found a set of dart heads #dart 230. Can prob get them for $100-$200 if they are worth it. Says they are 70cc with 2.12 valves. Think these may be too much for street/strip?

Dart 230's will work great on a 400+ cubic inch motor. With +0.030" KB125's, 70cc chambers, 0.040" gasket and zero deck, the static compression ratio will be 10.68:1 with a 0.040" squish. Use a cam with 230-240 degrees duration. Call up your favorite cam grinder and ask the tech for a recommendation.

I have a comp cam .488/.488 cam. At least that is what he said and everything else he told me was true. The rods are iron eagle I beam rods. Believe they are 5.7. May be 6.0 but I do not have them here to check out. think the cam will work well with the heads?
