400sbc flywheel balancing

I have a 400 sbc that will be running shortly. The plan is to put it in a tractor for pulling. I would like to use the tractor flywheel, but the 400 is externally balanced I've heard. How much damage will it do running with an unbalanced flywheel or how hard would it be to balance the tractor flywheel

Send the 400 and the tractor wheels to a balance shop and have it done. A simple job.

I'm curious why the tractor flywheel is wanted- does it have some sort of "special" pressure plate, or is it extra heavy, or ?

There are a number of reasons for the tractor flywheel. 1) the pto shaft goes directly into splines in the flywheel, I need the pto to run a loader that is on the tractor. 2) the friction disc is a different size and has different splines. 3) I think the chevy pressure plate is too small to fit over the input shaft. 4) The tractor flywheel is bigger and heavier. I think I will have to use the tractor starter because there isn't room in the frame for the gm starter. Sorry for the long reply

all you have to do is take both flywheels to a machine shop for zero out the balance you need then match your other flywheel to that balance super simple!
However, if you try to use an unbalanced flywheel kiss those bearings goodbye as well as that motor.
