Lone, First and foremost, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service to our country...

I like your will power to do something different.

Before I would start the build sit down with some paper and figure out the prices to do what you want to do, then ask your self is it worth the money to do this?? I would not put any stock what-so-ever in that magazine build. I did not read the entire article, but soon as i got to the picture of the guy with the torque wrench on the rod bolts i quit. That shop does not have a clue.

Your single biggest problem with making power in your build is the cylinder heads. Adding more CI to a all ready taxed head is not going to give you the returns you are hoping for.

Can you tell me what exactly it is HP wise you trying to obtain???

Also, please think long and hard about using the original number matching engine. If you break it, there is not another one to replace it, it's the only one you will ever have. I have talked a few customers out of HOT-RODDING there number matching engine, in favor of one that can be broken with-out affecting the value of the car.

Once you make your mind up about that i can help you with some things that will make your engine perform the way you want it to.

Keith

K-Star,

I'm trying to get my 72 Monte into the mid 11's or so. The HP numbers are not my concern. I have seen many guys bragging about 500 HP and have seen many dyno sheets, but in the end they do not run very quick in the 1/4 mile. To me E.T. is the number I am concerned with. I know I am limited by the heads, so I am willing to change them out, since the numbers can't be seen with the valve covers on. I know the 396 is capable of over 400 horse power with the right cam and heads. Like I said my Camaro ran mid 11's( high 10's on a 150 shot of gas) all day on pump gas, so I know it can be done. Thanks again for the help and buy the way it's my pleasure to do what I do everyday. If my service makes one person feel safe then it's worth it. Take care.

i know that 396/402 can get you into the 11's i was just saying that with a car that weighs over 4000lbs like the 70-74 monte carlo's you will have to make a bunch more hp/tq than you made with the 72 camaro cause it only weighed about 3400lbs 600-700 lbs is a lot in racing in know that set up and suspension plays a big role in how fast the car is at the 1/4, i've seen a 3000lbs nova with only an est 430/450 hp/tq run about 11.0 but i have also seen a 3400lbs chevelle with est 450/450 hp/tq only run 11.8-12.0, for a 4000lbs car i would estimate that even with a great set up you will still have to put out atleast 500/500 to run mid 11's, by a racing calculator it says 620+ but i dont trust that too much. good luck i hope you get it how you want it, either way it will "haul the mail" im sure, best wishes on deployment man
