Red face 402 rebuild or crate motor

402 rebuild or crate motor

Hello This is my first time on Hotrodder
I have a 402 block w/ stock bore
w/ : 427 crank - 3804815
427 heads - 3964290
The cam was a crane cam 288-2-NC
Pistons - 3993849LH ?
I'm not sure If I should rebuild with: Edelbrock RPM al. Heads, Performer Rpm cam kit, Air gap manifold, and stock or .30 over rebuild kit.
The block needs new cam bearings, hot tanked and checked for cracks.
I'm looking to get 450 to 500hp on pump gas.
My question is should I spend the money rebuilding the 402 or buy a GM ZZ454.
The zz454 is about $5,500 plus shipping.
Would it be cheaper to build the 402. I estimated about $3,400 for parts.
Not sure how much machine work would be & Build price at a local machine shop.
One place told me close to $6,000 to make my 402bbc 500hp on pump gas.
Please someone help.

rebuild

I would suggest to you (buy new) because with or without experience you must trust your machine shop to be straight with
you. A 402 could make that much horse power, but it will be pricey.

$ for $ a 454 will make more power, except..than you have to buy a 454. the 402 can make 450-500 streetable HP farley easily & I see no reason why it should cost 6K

You might want to check a local machine shop's price to prep the block and install/balance the rotating assembly. Assembling the short block is tricky. Then finish the build yourself, if you have some mechanical experience or some really good friends with same.

It would be a shame to let the block go to waste.
