402 vs 454
i have a 72 402 bb i am wanting to build a 500 horse motor for my chevelle i also have a friend who has a 454 which motor would be a better choice i could swap even my 402 has oval heads and the 454 has rect. im not sure about the year on the 454 but i think it is a 71 from a truck is the 402 worth more than the 454??????

If the 454 has rectangular ported heads, it's a Hi perf motor and NOT from a truck.
It.s the way to go.

If the oval port heads on the 402 aren't the little "peanut port" heads, keep them and swap shortblocks. More cubes is better but the big port heads really aren't what they're cracked up to be, unless you plan to rev the snot out of it all the time. If that's the case go for the big'uns

A 402 is a baby big-block nowadays. Not a bad motor, but not really worth much unless you know someone restoring a chevelle and in need of a date-correct motor. Hell, even a 454 isn't a big big-block anymore, with 502's and even 572,s being more and more common.
