You plan on 12:1 with cast iron heads? better have a huge cam in it, it wont like the street much.

What fuel will you be running? Why not keep the IK200 heads, clean them up a bit and get a mechanical roller cam and the dart intake. Get a 4500-5000 stall race converter.
How much does this monte weight? find a 850-1000 cfm carb. If you are not going to run race gas don't build with 12:1 compression. |

keep the brodix heads and use Comp cams cam 12-900-9 CS288AR-6
you can look it up. If you need it on a small base circle for rod bolt clearance call comp to order it (.900" cam base circle) Call comp to get the right valve train for it. If you are not going to use race gas build it with a real 10.5:1cr The IK 200's clean up nicely from the out of the box as cast form. Note the hot lash is .026" .028" When you set the lash cold set it at .022" .024" "cold" Do not use junk valve springs. Use what comp recomends at minimum. Call for tech advise. Thats what they are for. This is a good street strip roller for your 400 and purpose. Big enough to make some power for the track but not so big to be a street machine cam. the 3500 stall and 4.10's will work with this cam, in a 400. A cleaned up port matched vic Jr or a Super vic or a Hurricane with a port match and a spacer all will work good for you. 750HP carb ok.... 850-1000 HP best Keep the compression ratio under 11:1 for pump gas. I had a 383 in the car but the car was stolen. The 383 i bought complete it ran best time of 8.27 on 89 octane in 1/8 mile dnt no any specs on that motor just trying to do honework on this 400 before i spend money in wrong place

If you want some more top end power run the lash tighter. the car will show you what it likes.
The 10" 3500 stall will get you started. A 8" 9" race converter will leave harder (ATI racing) Degree this cam in ... 102° intake C/L is a good start point. |

Get some Air Lift Air bags (drag bags) and control arm relocations brackets and a drive shaft loop for your monte. The stock GM posi will bust.. Get a NEW Auburn or A NEW Eatons posi for it.
and some sticky tires .. ET street or slicks or Drag Radials. 26" to 27" tall. |

depends in who you ask. I do my own heads so....
The IK 200's don't need that much work to wake them up. Pretty much a clean up. You can consider doing that yourself. They don't need big re-shaping. Just clean up and contour whats there. Do not shop or chase flow bench numbers.. These heads work very well with a general but complete clean up. The dart 215 head is not a trade up. Its more of a trade over. You will get more of what you want by cleaning up the Brodix heads and getting this roller and matching up , sweetening up a intake and HP carb for it. Ya they are ok. You can make the Vic JR more OK with some sweetening.
Clean up port match and a spacer. you don;t seem like a hard core racer. I would not go with a 12:1 cr. Keep it pump gas compatible and work on other areas for real street/strip gains. less than 11:1 cr measured. get your heads on a flow bench.2 reasons.if the flow numbers are good then you know your horse power potential,therefore easier to pick the matching parts,second reason,lots of heads are weak on the exhaust side, so they need porting on the exhaust side or you can compensate slightly with a split duration cam.
If you dont measure the flow and build the engine,later if you are not happy,you have no information to work with.That car will dip into the 11s with those heads stock out of the box.The quality job you do depends on the details you look after,,,,have fun with that car.I worked on a friends monte carlo and we made it go 14.1s with a near stock 400 and 2.73 gears. It also got decent mileage. |
