1. The 42 Pickup box is for an open driveline, i.e., one that has a u-joint at each end and a yoke that slides into the transmission as modern ones do. The first open drive Fords were the 42-47 Pickups, all cars up to 1948 (this includes your 38) had a closed driveline.
2. If you're going to a 289 (or 302) you might just as well replace the trans and rearend with modern compoents as well.

Newt, recommend you go ahead and solve the clutch hook up problem with a modern, fully syncronized tranny now cause you will get tired of replacing the older clutches and poorly syncronized gears of the weak 42 tranny. Clutch activation can easily be accomplished with a hydraulic servo utilizing your present Clutch/brake assembly.

OK, if you want to use the 42 trans (open drive) you'll need to change the brake and clutch pedal assembly to a 40 unit and get the frame bracket&ball assembly and cross shaft. That will solve the clutch hookup and is a bolt-in operation. I'm assuming you've got a 39 assembly in there now?
Another option is to dismantle the transmission (42) and swap all it's guts and rear bearing retainer into and onto your existing transmission.
All this to get an out-dated, technologically inferior, low-geared driveline to attach a modern V8 to? If that's what you're looking for, go for it!!
