Ive just traded for a 427 goodwrench with 2k miles pulled out of a ambulance with a 4 spd manuel tarns still hooked up. Also have a 77 chevy short wide id to put it in am i gonna have any major issues besides brackets and will this motor still smoke tires like a 350?
That 4 spd is probably equipped with a granny low gear. probably NOT what you're looking for in a trans. 427 tall decks are stump pullers, not normally drag racing engines. However, Randy on here, who is definitely talented and not normal (LOL) had one in a pro street car I think
welcome to the forum.
You got a 427 talldeck and standard transmission out of an ambulance? The 427 talldeck is a truck engine,a couple members here have used that engine for street cars, the return on the dollar input will be lower than some other choices
Yep.Pretty much everything you buy for a tall deck is exclusively for tall decks only.If you want to swap parts over,it will have to be another tall deck. Those are getting scarce.Well atleast the GM old blocks are.
I'm also wondering if the spacer plates to adapt the RPM intake to the motor could be epoxied-in so they wouldn't leak. Has anyone had any success with using the spacer plates. I mean, they still sell them, so they must be ok if you can seal them up.
my guess would be the compression on this is low 8 to one
a procharger bypasses the intake spacer problems ,roots s/c install..
or 2) 6.o or 6.7 powerstroke turbo's would add to the fun
Thanks guys not lookin for a drag truck out of the 77 but like the idea of the 427 with the four speed tranny that came with it. Its a huge motor im wonderin if anyones put this set up in a shortwide with success and the tranny is massive hopin i can buy brackets to just bolt it in and parts for this thing aint easy to find. Ill post pics of the motor and tranny any info on installin them so i dont learn the hard way would be greatly appreciated this is mine and my sons first build.
the 73-87 trucks came with 454 big blocks as an option(later years in dualies mostly) your 427 should bolt in with big block frame stands.. no idea on the trans.. how much bigger is it compaired to a th400?
the 4 spd that came with the 427 if it's the granny low.. in a short box 1/2 ton you might as well call it a 2 speed.. take off in 2nd and straight to 4th.. I'd rethink That trans..
Ya thats what im lookin at now not sure which would be best but know i do want a standard. This thing is huge has a knob the owner said went to the rear end the transfer case had 2 gears also

A TH350 or TH400 or Powerglide will bolt up, but a TH400 is what the factory bolted in behind the big blocks. My thinkin' is that if you didn't step on a TH350 too hard, it would be fine. Don't cheap-out on the flexplate, use a good, strong unit.
im thinkin powerglide and ill be sure flex plate is money well spent now also saved or threads with the grunt later down road im gonna try it out see if i can eat these imports up around tulsa!!!!! thanks
ok ill start lookin for a turbo400 also whats the best carb to put on it had a old factory holley but was junk so took it off any ideas on best replacement? And havin hell findin a distributer old one was a mud dobber haven i panicked smashed it all {lol} wife laughed
Anyone have a link or know where i could get a stock distributor or a way to improvise one for this tall deck cant find anything threw autozone or local parts places
