Post 428 timing

What would the correct timing be for a 69 Pontiac 428? I have it set at 8 BTDC. I think its a stock cam. The engine runs hot at slow speeds and there is a occassional backfire through the carb. I has pretty good power but I think it should move my Catalina convert. a little better even if it is the 360 hp version. I'm running a Carter AFB 600 or 650 cfm and Caddy automatic.

If I had the money I would get it too. But I have nothing to put it in except maybe my 40 Plymouth truck or my 85 chevy pickup.

The Catalina convert is very heavy. I am not sure that I have it running at its top performance. I have not been able to locate the kickdown switch for the tranny so I can't enjoy that peddle to the floor acceloration.

I have some backfire so I am not sure if everything inside is in good working order. I tried to clean out the carbon with some heavy duty carbon cleaner and it made the backfire worse for a while. It seems to be running much better now.

I believe they only made the 428 for 3 years 1967 to 1969. So far I have not had any trouble getting parts. It have an Edlebrock alum intake.

I think the price for the motor is pretty good. If it wasn't for the shipping I would be looking at it too. To bad he is not in WA

Timing should be 8-10 initial and no more than 34 total all in by 2000rpms. With the backfire problem it sounds like maybe a rich or lean condition in the carb. Look down the inside of the carb when it's running and make sure there's not a drip.
