454 in 65; what mounts?

You guys have been very helpful, but I'm at another brickwall;

I am putting a 454 in my 65 impala, I am using 396 exhaust manifolds. I originally tried to use the 327 mounts, they make the motor sit too low and it exhaust manifolds hit steering box. So from advice here, I ordered '69 396 engine mounts. They are too narrow to 'seat' on the engine supports. I cannot modify them without ruining them. Any ideas?

There are basically 2 types of mounts. Tall and narrow and short and wide. The frame mounts need to match the engine mounts. You need to get the corrcect set of frame mounts

I appreciate you effort to help, ad I don't mean to be rude, but that's why I posted; I am trying to find the right mounts to use.

Probable that you will also need 65-6 Impala 396 exhaust manifolds as well

hi, im not trying to be a smart a** but the big block frame mounts dont sit in the same spot as the small block ones if you look at the cross member there are two sets of holes i didnt know if you were aware of that so i just wanted to mention it. keep checking on ebay for 65-66 bb frame mounts they should show up on a fairly regular basis.

I think a lot of the trucks used the tall mounts.

I don't see where that's different... A big block will bolt up right where a sbc was... There's no difference... The only difference between the big and small block is from the mount's forward.. It should fit right where the small block was..

i agree with you, i never built a big block so i made the mistake of assuming that is why there are two sets of holes so the fact that i do have two sets of holes must be to mount a six cyl. 250. but again thats a guess.

I hear people all the time say the same thing.. (I had to move my mounts on the frame for the big block...) I don't see where there would be a difference...I show the proof right here..

The only way I can see there might be a difference is,, If it's a tall are short mount... Then that ''MIGHT'' make a difference... But when using the same mount, It should fit in the same place...

He needs to use the taller style mount for clearance. The frame piece of the mount is different for the taller mount. The distance between the tabs with the bolt holes for the through bolt is shorter on the tall mount. 2 5/8 for the short mount vs 2 3/8 for the tall mount

6cylinder frame mounts are different.
My 454 dropped right into the v-mounts on the 59 (way before the 396 came)

Some cars do use different frame mounts for the BBC, but the mounts do not relocate the engine. On the Chevelles, the mounts provide a tab to keep the engine in place should a mount break loose.

Other than that--should go right on in there with SBC mounts

The oil pan may need to be changed to a shallower 4-qt pan for frame x-member clearance tho
