I used a F100 9" rear from a 79 or 80 pickup. Shortend one side 3" to center the pinion. Made it 60" overall. Welded the stock mounts to it and it worked great.

A stock 700r can't handle much more than a stock 454. Be careful.

A BBC will get around 25% less mpg as a sbc, if that is a concern.

The sbc engine your friend has is worth much more than 1000. Buy the engine and sell it for 2500 then put the money towards the BBC. (aluminum edelbrock heads and intake).

What heads are on your 454?

The stock 454 w /od will probably get better mileage than the Built 350 with the Carb & converter and gears he would have to run . Just my opinion
