454 Cam

ok so i am building a mostly stock BBC. i have 049 heads with the stock valves, and will maybe do a mild port. the block has been bored .030, with flat top pistons. and i think that my gears are 3.08's. its stock 81 firebird and i couldnt find any information on what size the gears may be. but i know it has a posi and its a 10 bolt. so now my question is that what size cam would be best. i am not trying to build a monster but i want it to have more power and torque than stock. its for the street so i would like the power band to be in the lower RPM range, not planing to go over 5500. any input would be helpful. thanks.

The rear gear is a GM 8.5
Since you`ve laid out your plans, this is a no brainer decision. A edelbrock performer camshaft is all you need. It provides a smooth idle, great low end torque and it`s powerband goes to 5500, ideal for your purposes.
If the car has T tops, and even if it don`t, Installing some subframe connectors would be a good idea.

I`d install sub frame connectors with the next to stock big block your installing. These cars like to flex, especially after they get older. My 79 Z28 flexed with a small block and it did it`s share of damage.
