Post 454 CAMSHAFT GROOVE

HI, I'VE GOT A QUESTION THAT I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND AN ANSWER TO. I HAVE A 71 CHEVY 454 BIG BLOCK ENGINE THAT I'M GOING TO CHANGE CAMSHAFTS IN. I'M NOT SURE THE ONE I WANT TO USE WILL BE A PROBLEM OR NOT. THE CAMSHAFT THAT I WOULD LIKE TO USE IS A COMP CAM 292H THAT WAS GIVEN TO ME. THE PROBLEM IS IT HAS A GROOVE IN THE REAR JOURNAL. THIS WAS NEEDED IN 1965 AND 66 CAMS TO ALLOW OIL FLOW TO THE LIFTERS. MY ENGINE DOESN'T USE A CAMSHAFT WITH THIS GROOVE. I'M WONDERING IF I CAN USE THE CAMSHAFT WITH THE GROOVE WITHOUT MAKING ALTERATIONS. I'VE HEARD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO INSTALL THE 65-66 CAM BEARING OR I WOULD HAVE A SIGNIFICANT INTERNAL OIL LEAK. I DON'T SEE WHY I WOULD HAVE AN OIL LEAK. I'D APPRECIATE ANY INPUT. THANX.

the very first 55-57 chevy small block had a unique oiling system, which also is the case for the early big-block. i wouldnt think the groove should be a problem, there is a sillilar groove in the bearing to allow oil to circulate to the top of the engine, but running a cam from a 65-66 396/427 engine should'nt be a problem.

I just was reading on this the other day in a Hastings bookstore, I think it was how to hotrod big block chevys. It mentioned running a grooved cam in a non-grooved block, and said something about restricting the oil, but I can't be sure. I'm pretty sure you can run the grooved cam in a non-grooved block, but I would follow up just to be sure. I'll dig around and see what information I can find, because I have a brand new, NOS Nitro Crane solid drag cam for a 66 Big Block and would like to know myself.

No problem using grooved cam with grooved bearing,Years ago I put a non grooved cam in a 66 396,Thus no oil pass. side.lifters.You will not have excessive oil leak, the clearance between the cam and the cam bearing is the same,if anything, you will have a little more oil at the rear cam bearing.
