454 eng. firing order.

I have a Chev 454 engine in my RV. In order to read the timing mark with the engine running, I have my timing light pickup on the left rear spark plug cable. ( As I am looking over the radiator. Is this the #1 firing spark plug for this engine>

Hey Jim,
#1 plug on all Chevy V8's is first plug on right side of engine(looking at engine from front of vehicle, drivers side being considered right side for all intents and purposes...lol)). One easy way to tell is #1 on most all if not all engines is the first plug on the cylinder head that is closest to the front of the vehicle( assuming that your engine is in front of your motor home of course). Firing order: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Chev. 454 engine firing order.

The 454 in my RV has the timing tab located at about the 5:00 position when viewing from the front. Another tab is at the 2:00 position, which I cannot get a light on.
Anyway, my engine is setup for the #8 wire to be #1. I repositioned the dist. today to the true #1 position and it would not start in that mode. I repositioned it back to firing on #8, as it orig. was and it runs fine.
I think It was setup this way because of the lack of availibilty to the orig timing ( upper) tab. Would this have required retiming of the Cam?
I am back in business, running great.
Thanks to all for the suggestions.
Jim C

Firing order setup

I've read your article and think you have already got it going. One suggestion I have in mind is to always know your vehicle. If you take out #1 spark plug and bring it up to top dead center (compression stroke), then check where your rotor is pointing. It should be pointing at the #1 location on the cap, run your wires according to a diagram, I got a nice one a few names above yours. If the rotor is 180 degrees off and your sure the piston is in the correct place this may be why the wiring has been played with. Bring it all back to original. You'll feel good about what you've done and have a real handle on what's happening.
Also good for a little fun!! Invite a friend (with a positive attitude) it will make the job go easy!
