454 Harmonic Balancer

Hope you guys can help, I'm replacing my water pump and hoses. while I have the radiator and water pump off, I'm thinking about replacing the timing chain. My Chev k2500 Suburban has about 210,000 miles on it and I think the timing chain is about due. I'm getting a little hesitation from time to time which is reminiscent of a 350 I once had, that had a nylon driven gear that was worn out.

Does the 454 have steel drive and driven timing chain gears? or nylon? Does anyone know what the life expectancy of a 454 timing chain is?

Do you guys think I should go in and replace it now or wait and go in later?

How does the harmonic balancer center bolt come off. (lefty loosy, righty tighty) or the other way. it's pretty stubborn so I thought I would ask before I made a really big mess.

Not a bad idea but I would just remove the cover and check for excessive play and let that be your guide. What year is the truck/motor? THe dampner bolt is standard threaded so lefty loosey.

Should be steel gears and chain.

They have steel gears but at 210K I would put one in if I was half way there. The ballancer bolt is going to be pretty tight so you need a good impact or use the old ratchet on the frame and bump the starter trick but that is not for the faint of heart. You also will need to get it back as tight when you put it together or bad things will happen. A 94 should have a one peice oil pan gasket so you will need to drop the front half of the pan at best.

Hope this helps, Mike
