454 head issue

Hi, I have 454 that is heating up at idle but runs cool at speed. Preliminary checks show no water in the oil but it is surging water in the radiator. This shows compression in the water system so it is either a cracked head or head gasket. Does anyone know of a quick way to check either?

Thanks in advance..

How long has it done this (is this a new build)? Not trying to be a wise***, but are you sure you have the air purged out of the system? Are you seeing air bubbles?

Probably bad head gasket from improper install or incorrect gasket.. BBC heads are pretty tough to crack..

You can use a compression tester (engine warmed up) to isolate the problem to one bank. Then pull that head and inspect for a bad gasket or cracked castings (block or head, neither is as likely as a bad HG as said already).

454 head issue

I agree with the bad head gasket. As many different head gaskets for sale today for a 454 engine it wouldn't be hard to purchase the wrong gasket. When installing new head gasket make sure all the water jacket holes align.
