It's a whopping 230 hp and 385 lbs.ft. torque, the SS pick up had 255 hp...supposedly. Those 80's 454's suffered from very low compression, about 7.5:1 and crappy heads.

230 HP at 3600 RPM, 385 HP at 1600 RPM. 7.9:1 compression. The heads weren't any real problem. The '91-'93 454SS had 255 HP at 4000 RPM, and 405 TQ at 2400 RPM because of the exhaust system.
These are the peanut-port heads, but with no porting, and the right supporting mods, a 9.5:1 ( requires swapping in domed pistons ) 454 with a Comp XE268H10 cam can pull 5500, with 446 HP at 4900. Not bad.
Some will suggest the large-oval-port heads, but those will actually cost you enough torque to feel the difference, especially below 3000 RPM.
