What's accetable oil pressure (at idle & 2500 @ rpm) for a '92 Chevy 454 truck engine? This is a hot rod question because the truck containing this engine would be used to pull a 8,500 lb. trailer whose contents include a rod with a Ford engine. Don't want to be left stranded in the middle of nowhere. The truck in question has about 100,000 miles on it with no engine work done in the past. Current oil pressure (when hot, registered on an Autometer guage) is about 22 lbs. at idle, and 35 lbs. at 2,000 - 2,400 rpm. Any help greatly appreciated.

Not that 4 jaw chuck needs any back-up, (I've read alot of his posts the last few days, definatly knows his stuff!) but I read once that 10 psi per 1000 rpm would offer the maximum protection and that any more just causes extra power loss from pumping excessive oil that is not needed.

I'm not saying that more than this is going to be a problem, I'm just saying that is all that is required for proper operation. In a street car that sees many miles of use and ware you have to start with a higher pressure because when things wear it will eventually get lower. If you start out on the edge when new, you would need freshining up after maybe 10,000 miles. On another note I have seen dyno tests that show that if you run your oil level at the bottom of the acceptable range versus at the most full of the acceptable range, you can see a 7-10 hp increase. How is that for a free tenth in a pinch!?
