454 Rear Main Seal
I think I may have an oil leak at my rear main seal. I would be doing an in-vehicle replacement.
I've done RMS's on newer one piece designs (LT1's). Are there any special tools needed to replace the older two piece design? Any tips/tricks for doing this on a 454? Any recommended sources for this seal? I would just go with felpro. How difficult will it be to slide in the upper half of the seal with the engine/crank still in the vehicle? I need to verify for sure its the RMS. I do not want to pull the tranny!

Changing a rear two piece seal is a fairly common repair. Fel-Pro seal is good. After all the "stuff" is out of the way. I usually use a modified putty knife to push the old seal out far enuff th get with some grab tool. Then I install the new one with silicone sealer on the mount side. Keep it well compressed against the crank as you start the install, turning the crank will help and don't skin off any of the seal material on the block flange. I also stagger and silicone the ends. DON"T PUT IT IN BACKWARDS! good luck.

You can get a little tool that looks like a Chinese finger cuff, works pretty good.
The hard part is removing the pan. On some cars it's just as easy to remove the engine. Is it possible to do this with the trans & torque converter still bolted up? A friend of mine said its possible, I just completely over looked that possibility. I'm used to the one piece seals requiring tranny removal. He said it can be done in car, after all I'd be sliding the seal around and out the bottom. I figure I'd use some hard plastic tool, like a 'modified' tooth brush to push the old seal out. I wouldn't want to risk scratching any of the surfaces.
Any special material to seal the end pieces together or just good RTV? I haven't bought one yet, so which way is backwards? I assume it will look like the one piece seals I'm used to. In that case the open part of the lip would go towards the engine.

Just drop the pan, oil pump, rear main cap, look at the old seal, put the new one in facing the same direction. A little dab of RTV, and of course at the corners of the pan.
