Just go to any auto parts house website and plug in your engine. From the stock plug listing you can go up or down with heat range until you get the reading you like, all motors will be a little different.

To be honest I have no idea what to look for ? What factors to consider? Any advice would be appreciated.

Would I make a choice based on my mid 70's 454 block or 1965 396 heads ?

The '65 396 heads will take the big 13/16" hex size plugs. The mid 70's 454 application would take 5/8" hex "peanut" plugs which won't fit the early 396 heads.

R44 would be the AC Delco number, possibly R43 if you need a cooler plug.
