454 upgrade

I have a 1972 454 in my 1985 el camino. I bought a new set of brodix heads, and I want to buy a hydraulic roller cam, But I'm not sure which one I need. I have a turbo four hundred transmission, a posi rear and I'm not sure about the gear. As far as I know the motor is stock right now. I'm looking at a comp cam on summit #SK11-423-8. Duration 276/282, lift 510-/510. I also plan on buying a dual plane high rise manifold and probably a holly carburetor.

this cam would work best with an aftermarket stall but should also work with the factory stall as well. if you still have the factory gears in the car then that would be the next thing i would upgrade. a set of 3.73:1 would be a much added improvment to the likely stock 2.72-3.08:1 gears that are in there now.

I'm not a hundred percent sure about the gear, but I do know it is a posi traction.

to get a really good idea of what gears you have in the rear, you can jack up the rearend, put a piece of tape on the driveshaft then trun the tire 1 full rotation, watching the driveshaft and counting how many revolutions it does. if it does less than 3 you probably have 2.72:1, if it just does 3 then you 3.07 or 3.08:1 gears. get the idea.
