456 gear swap to 373 in 8.5 rearend, carrier swap?
I have what might be a stupid question I have a 8.5 456 pos under my camaro i'm goin to change to a 373 a guy told me 373 and lower all had the same carrier and anything higher had a different carrier is there any truth to this just trying to get out of pulling cover off until I order a new ring and pinion thanks

It's true that, from the factory, a carrier for a 4.56 and a 3.73 were the same, but there are gearsets available for the higher geared carriers, too.
They make the ring gear thicker to locate it in the right place when used on a carrier for higher gear ratios. I would suggest that you verify which carrier you have before you order the new ring & pinion. You might be in for a surprize, otherwise.
