Got the car home from Omaha and now I have questions. I tried searching the forums but no joy, so I ask you all for your aid. Can we say, "Under the car scraping 56 years of crud off?"
1. I don't know what the "name" of the transmission is in my 49 Fleetline. I looked on tocmp.com but no sight of a name. All the specs say is "Own, 3 speed synchro-mesh, manual shift". The gears are 1-2.94:1; 2-1.68:1; 3-Direct and Reverse-2.94:1. How do I brag what I'm running when I don't know what to call it? And how do I look up parts without a name? These types of questions keep me up at night.
2. There is a man-made hole a little smaller than a pencil eraser in the front bell-housing--the one that is held in by screws, just forward of the shift levers. Should that be there or should there be a plug?
3. As we make our way back to the rear, I noticed a section of the drive shaft that has a "ribbed" appearance, like it's a precision-machined part. This part is directly above the parking brake spring. My question on this one is should that be exposed like that? It looks, and I am hypothesizing here, it looks like grease is coming off the drive shaft and onto the parking brake spring; the spring is completely coated with caked on grease.
I am a novice, and I frankly don't know enough to know what is out of place on my car and what is not. Sorry, I don't have a means to post pictures, but I tried to stay under a thousand words!
