4l60 trans problem

i have a 91 caprice classic 5.0 305 and the torque converter went out i dont want to say blow up but the inside came apart now i was told when they do that it puts metal shavings in your trans and embeds in your clutchs. i tried to shack out the stuf in the converter and nothing came out what im getting at is do i have to rebuild or should i just take the pan off and check for shavings befor i get parts.

Or get lazy like me and buy a used one from the re-cycle yard, toss a kit in it, and go. Gives me more time to cook and eat ribs!
