4l60E 4X4 2WD DIFFERENCES

I was wondering if I could just change the ouput shaft on a 2wd 4l60e and install the 4x4 output shaft into it.

Its a 3 piece case model. Is the 700r4 4x4 output shaft the same as the 4l60e output shaft?

Thanks,
Pugsy

1. Change shaft and go.
2. 700-R4 shaft not the same but will work fine.

I believe you can, but I think the output shaft goes in the case first, meaning that you have to gut the tranny.......Turbo 350 is that way anyways.....

BTW...Happy Birthday.....belated.....

Shaft is changed. I ripped down both units and swapped them out.

The 700r4 shaft did indeed have more lube holes.
The governor gear on the shaft wouldn't matter I suppose.

Poncho: the 4l60e and 700r4 have a snap ring holding in the shaft, but its almost a full teardown anyways.

All the tranny's I have had required the trans to be gutted all the way to replace the tailshaft..Saying that the only difference between 2wd and 4 wd trans was the tailshaft and tailshaft housing..but then knowin Murphy's Law as well as I do there is a trans made somewhere somehow that will make me out to be a liar...
