4L60E internal part question?

I had a part fail in my truck and am just wondering what the cause was from.

The part looked like a aluminum piston about 2" round with some dog or ears on it and a "O" ring on the outside.
Is this a failure part?

The truck was being "used" in low gear and when it shifted there was a metallic clicking noise and when it went into 4th gear I felt a drag, so I called for the hook.

We need a better description or a picture.

There are 2 pistons in that transmission about that size. Neither one has ears nor dogs. And if I remember correctly, both of those pistons are identical to each other, which raises the question about which one failed.

When you say failed, how did it fail? Did it explode? Did it break? Did it crack? Did it get stuck in the bore? Or what?

I did not get to take it with me, but the builder only said that it was not a part that they replace when rebuilding, (maybe they should).
He also said that this is only the second one he has seen broken,in 15 years!
The first one was in a Police car and we know how they treat them!
From what I remember it was cracked and a piece was broken from it.
If I had a pic I may be able to ID it.
This is the first hot rod that I have built that has a auto the rest are all 4 and 5 speeds.

The shop that talked me into the 4L60E I trust as I have know him for 25 years, by the way he did warrenty the R&R and the rebuild.
This trans is in a 53 Chevy 1/2 ton with a stock ZZ4 and a 9" with 3:25 gears and 255 70x15..

Thanks for your help.

from what you described, it sounds like a accumulator piston. here is a link to 1.
http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-000035956.htm is this what youre talking about?
they are not a high failure part even though they do fail at times. they usually have wear problems around the pin.

Thanks, I think that is it, and that sounds right as it happened when it should have shifted into second.
By that time I had backed out of the throttle

So why do you think this part failed?
Is this a weak part in the 4L60E?
Do I need to control my right foot, or are these transmissions not up to the "task" of a hot rodder?

On my 4L60E Trans at one time some piston broke and they had to replace it with some housing that it goes in. Now when that happen I was in down town Houston and it would hit second gear hard and chirp the tires BAD to where it scared me I also remember the part wasn't cheap.
