As far as I know my wagon has never towed anything besides maybe my dad's Pinto out of the dirt or something like that. It doesn't have a hitch nor will it ever. I don't really plan on owning a trailer. I got connections with friends with little trailers that'll hook up on my li'l '83 Nissan 720 4WD.

From after this whole discussion I've seen it just seems like the 4L60E's break after 50k. Is that while using a trailer or just plain driving around? I'm only asking so I can one day avoid getting a lemon.

Until that day comes, the day I finally have money to buy "nice" cars, I'll keep nickel & diming my bread & butter wagon.

It has been some time since I rebuilt a transmission but I need to rebuild the 4L60E in my Silverado. I think the 1st/reverse is going out in it. I was thinking of just buying a rebuild kit and a manual to do this. Is there any hidden things to worry about when you rebuild these transmissions?

Or, I could just pick one up for about 1000.00 to 1300.00 and install it myself. Seems I can save about a 600.00 to 1000.00 if I do it myself.

I'm just putting in my 2 cents here...not to argue nor decline other opinions.
Take the advice of someone that does this stuff as a second nature and
part of everyday life, that person steered me to the problem as if he had taken it a part . I have a friend with the same problem and in a 4x4, everything was fine until the bigger tires and wheels went on and only 70k on it, 7k later bang .

i have hauled a fullsize truck on a trailer 1000mile trip and a car 400 miles, honestly i was doing work that should have been handled by a one ton. and ofcourse towed around in my own state, i bought a truck because i need one, but i assumed....., anyway either the 700 or 4l60 are both good transmissions-in a car, and thats the problem they worked good in cars so they started sticking them in big trucks and suvs and they just cant hang.
i have friends with the same trucks who haul boats every weekend long one with almost 200k on it, seems like either it lasts forever or it craps out in no time, ive heard of people having the same problem who never tow, and people who tow like me and never have a problem. but its definately turned me from buying another new GM. wish i had enough $ for a crew cab turbo diesel with a manual. until then (never) im stuck with this and an old 82 GMC im going to build for doin the heavy work.

Mine has 170000... so I figured if it made it this far then that isn't to bad. Just was wanting to make it to 200000... who knows maybe I can be gentle on it and make it...

Whilst it's in bits and you was ordering from transmission centre, I would of ordered a 8 plate 3/4 pack, bigger servos and carbon band. I have some rebuild photo's on my website if they are any help.
