4L60E Limp Mode

1996 GMC Jimmy, 4.3L, 4X4, picked it up for 75 bucks, kid says the trans is bad, but it shifts fine after sitting for a couple of days, after a few miles goes into limp mode, IE: starts in third can manually shift to second, no 4th or TCC lockup, CE light is on. I have heard this can be a simple fix so any ideas would help me out greatly as at this point I need this vehicle badly.

Check engine lite on in the dash?

have you checked the fuses for bad ones? Check for corrosion on the fuses too, perhaps use a volt - ohm meter

Check engine

Yes the dash light is only lit when the trans goes into limp mode, when its shifting fine at first it is off. Will check the fuses, I assume I am looking for standard 12 volts?

you need to scan for codes if the dash 'check engine' lite is coming on...

Guess I got to take a trip to AutoZone then...no scanner out here. I hate to drive it though if its a bad problem, may end up worse than I started.
