4l60e No 3rd Or 4th

I have been searching the forums for any info on my trans, no 3rd or 4th. I was a Chrysler trans tech for about 8 years, until a back injury. Was hoping to find a "non-invasive" solution. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Unfortunately, I'm not bearing good news. This is usually a sign of 3-4 clutch failure. Does the fluid smell burnt? Is it dark? 3-4 failure is a common failure in 4L60E's. Fortunately, there are ways to make great improvements during a rebuild to make them hold up better...

Thanks

I have been debating doing this myself, with a little help from my son. I think I am going to try it, so I will probably be asking many questions of all the knowledgeable people on this forum. Thank you in advance.

Year , make , mileage on the unit?

You say no 3rd or 4th gears... does the trans stay in 2nd gear and no further upshifts , or does it seem to go into a neutral and the engine revs up?

no 3rd or 4th

1997 blazer 4.3L does not feel like it is upshifting. Press on pedal harder, will go faster, can go 45+ let off gas it coasts, step on gas harder will pull.

Thanks

as mentioned, any 'check engine' lite on?

Shift solenoids can fail in 2 methods. Electrical failure will set a DTC ( trouble code)... if they fail hydraulically, no code usually is set and the CEL is not activated.

A quality scanner that can read a live data stream to see if the PCM is commanding the shift to 3rd gear would help.

Or you could simply unplug the trans connector at the case and see if the trans is in 3rd gear or 2nd gear.

Pulling the fuse for the trans operation would function like unplug of the connector

I did unplug trans connector and drove, did move, but don't know if it was 2nd or 3rd. Had to press hard on gas, so I think it was 3rd. I have replaced 1-2, and 2-3 solenoids, no difference. Pan had dark "film" , no chunks or silver pieces . Fluid was dark, and smelled bad. I bought it used, and have not had it on the road. Does not feel like it is trying to shift up to 3rd.
Again thanks.

Back to my original diagnosis. I think you have 3'4 clutch failure...

It could have a bad 3-2 downshift sol which is in front of valvebody which would stop it from upshifting but would not make it slip if it slips or engine revs when time for 3rd the 3-4 clutches are bad .
