4L60E No Reverse/Low
 
I just bought a 1995 Chevrolet S10 with apprx. 192,000 miles on it. It had a "sluggish" reverse for about a day before it completely went out. I live in southeastern, Ky so we have a very mountainist terrain. So while going down a hill the other day I realized I didnt have low in 1st gear but I did in 2nd gear. From my knowlledge and what I've read I'm assuming that the low/reverse cluthces are shot. I'm tearing down the tranny now. Can anyone give me an idea of what exactly I should be looking for? All other gears shift and work fine in drive a little hesitation but not much.

the low/reverse clutches are in the rear of the case. odds are, you wont have any trouble identifying the problem once you get to them.
when you do a rebuild on this trans, make sure you get an EPC solenoid as part of the parts you buy to rebuild the trans. that will help correct the hesitation on the shifts. other things you are going to want to address while your in the trans is most likely replace the sunshell, the beast is preferred. also make sure the 3-4 clutch pack clearance is .025-.035 that will help premature 3-4 clutch failure. a good normal high energy band will work just fine for a stock rebuild, no need for a wide band as a new reverse input drum would be recommended if you do want that.
make sure you get the code off the torque converter as that will help insure that you get the proper replacement.
it will be on the front of the converter next to the hub. it will be a 4 letter code.

The reverse drum looks good I may upgrade the band as a precaution. The Sun Shell looked good but being a focal point of failure I'm going to upgrade it to a "beast" sun shell. As for the reverse low clutches....2 bands are warped pretty bad, friction plates are warn down and one is pitted, gonna do a rebuild with some extras and I think I'll be good to go. Got pics if anyone needs to see them for reference.
