4L60E Probably Toast But Humor Me

I've got a new to me '97 GM 2WD X-Cab Z71 with 225k miles, unknown history with no 3rd gear. The internet says I probably have wasted 3/4 clutch pack and will need to rebuild the tranny. OK I can deal with that....

But humor me. There are a couple of threads I found where the same symptom was solved with new shift solenoids and/or check valves of some type. So as long as I have the pan off and am changing the oil and hoping for a miracle, is there ANYTHING simple I can try servicing while I have the pan off that MIGHT "fix" my missing 3rd gear?

In the pictures, I've noticed that whatever that doohickey is on the left (pass side of vehicle) it wobbles while the one next to it doesn't. Also notice the connectors on the shift linkage module have kind of broken housings and the captive clips are gone.

And yet the fluid is dark red, does not smell but the residue in the pan is dark, dark gray. No metal chips.

Hi,
That gray stuff is metal probably real dark from friction material, time to rebuild.
Rich
PS I wouldn't waste the money on a filter & fluid change, if you've already perched them use them in the rebuild.

doohickey is shift solenoid.. 1 pair next to each other.

1 shift sol has spring loaded valve behind it , will seem tighter than other sol.

Shifter sensor is manual lever position sensor.. the connectors have a sealing glue on them. Light heat will loosen the glue for removal of the connector with out damage.. Most folks do not know this and break the plastic housing

OK I have moved out of denial phase and am pulling the tranny out. I have everything off/ready and am down to the 6 bolts that hold the bell housing onto the block. From what I can see, 4 are easy to get at and 2 are not. Are the top two (up near the intake manifold) something other than 14mm because I can't figure out how to get them off.

And is there a trick to accessing them? I am trying from below with about 20" of extension on my ratchet going down and to the back of the tranny. The only way I can see to try from the top is to take my hood off.

look a bit closer up at the top 2 bell housing bolts as they are studed like the 4 you can visibly see. they have attachments on those studs and are retained with a 13 mm hex head nut. once you get them off , remove the attachments and the 9/16/14mm will get the main hex head of the bell housing bolts.
